The latest debate in parenting.....
Beauty Pageants for Kids!!
Since the announcement a few weeks ago, that beauty pageants are about to launch in Australia, I have read a few comments & though quite a bit about it....
At first I wasn't that keen on the idea. You know, the recent stories about a mum in the UK botoxing her 8 yr old, and images of toddlers with "days of our lives" hair.... mmm too much! But as I thought about it, I realised I was being quite stereotypical in my approach and decided to take a look at a few of the new face book pages poping up...
Well - the parents seemed normal! So did the people running the comps. A natural approach. What the kids are being judged on seemed not that different to modelling, and heaps of kids do that without criticism! I just couldn't really find anything that off putting or over the top! So much for the image of the pushy stage mum with her spray tan gun in one hand and curling tongs in the other...
I know beauty pageants cop a lot of flack for the make up & hair (no different to dance really), and parents can go over the top when it comes to forking out the cash on expensive gowns, but I think the crazy stage mum is a minority - just like the pushy dance mum, or the abusive soccer mum, there are always a few in all sports & activities!
So, wow! Nothing too alarming really, I am actually ok with it all! And if you are wondering if the kids actually enjoy it, I just want to finish by saying that one of the best days of my kids lives, was the day they were flowergirls at their uncle's wedding. They got to dress up in gorgeous dresses, pretty shoes, have their hair and make up done beautifully, and walk down the isle in front of all those people.......... really, this is a little girls dream come true!! (and the prizes are fantastic!!)

Title: The Blog Is Back!
Well, it has been a while!
Looking over my website at what needs updating, I clicked on the long neglected blog..... Delete or Revive?
Hmmm do I have time for this?
Well, probably not - but I've decided to give it another try! A blog could be good - to introduce new items, and maybe just to post about the interesting and funny things we come by??!!!
So, to start things off, I thought I would just introduce myself that those that do not know me.
I'm Mel - Melanie that is - in the early days Pirouette Dance was a partnership, Mel & Mel (Melissa), we decided to separate the business, and Melissa took on "pirouette pettiskirts" as a separate label - and I took the Dance!!! The dance suits me - considering we are at dancing 6 days a week, it made sense!
So for the past 18mths, Pirouette Dance has been a sole operator business - just me!! Crazy at times, but loving it. More about me: I have 3 kids - Jolie 6, Bella 5 and Luca 2. Work school hours as a dental assistant for a private practice in Brisbane a few days a week and a few days for the school dental service. I get to finish in time to pick the kids up and take them dancing... then I get to run my business in the middle of the night :) Our dance school has been really supportive of my business, which really helps a lot - and of course facebook has been great to connect with customers.
I have big plans for Pirouette, but like everything, it all revolves around time and money......... but I really hope you stick around to find out!!
Til next time - and I promise not to leave it for 2yrs like I have previously!!

Title: what's new in pettiskirts???
It has been a loooonnnnggg time since we last blogged!
Wow - a lot has gone on in the last few months!
Firstly, we now proudly have a ladies wear store stocking our pettiskirts. We have specifically created a range to fit ladies up to size 18 - so now pettiskirts really are for everyone. "Burlesque Baby" is a fantastic store in Perth, that stocks fashion with a 50's feel. We are so proud to be featured amongst their other great items.
We also have 2 new online kids retailers about to launch our label in their stores! How exciting is that!!! More details later, but this means we have been busy, busy, busy designing a new label and logo especially for the pettiskirts and accessories. - Yep, they have become so huge in their own right, they deserve their own label!
We have just finished putting together our spring/summer range. It should be arriving within the next 2 weeks, so we cant wait to have it up for everyone to see. I cant tell the colour combinations, but I will give you a clue........... the theme is "Spring Carnivale" We also have a special range of pettiskirts coming in especially for our dancers, and we have given the collection the title of "little ballerinas" - no prizes for guessing what the colours featured in this range will be!!!!!
On top of all this, add to the collection the new corsets for the ladies range, petti tutus, and petti ballet shoes....... all on their way - we cant wait to show it off.

Title: Hooray - we're open for business!!!!
It's kind of crazy - but this dream has become a reality. What started as a way for us to save a few dollars on our own childrens dance shoes and costuming, has turned into a business! And it hasnt been without many late nights!
But finally we have found some excellent manufacturers and can bring some quality dancewear to the market at great prices.
We are soooo proud!
We are sure that you will love the quality and price we are offering, and cant wait for the ship loads that are heading our way.
Keep watch - we have so much to offer!
